Wrestlemania Greatest Matches #22: Money in the Bank Ladder Match (Wrestlemania 21)

The Build: As always, they had more wrestlers than they had room for matches at Wrestlemania. Chris Jericho suggested they do a ladder match with the entire midcard, and after a few different ideas were kicked around, Money in the Bank was born.

As a fun aside, I read that one idea was for this to be a “Hollywood Dreams” Match where the winner would get a wish that would have to be granted. Rob Van Dam was to win and be granted his wish that ECW come back.

The Match

Kane’s entrance sets all the ladders on the stage on fire, which is awesome. The other five guys all jump Kane in the aisle but he fights them off. The first big spot is a series of escalating dives to the floor. Jericho dives out onto Edge and Christian. Then Benoit dives out on them. Then Shelton dives out on the four guys. And then Kane goes up and dives off onto everybody, including Tomko.

Next big highlight is Benoit German Suplexing Jericho while Jericho is holding a ladder. Benoit goes to climb and gets goozled by Kane, but Benoit reverses into a Crippler Crossface. Kane later gets revenge by smashing Benoit’s arm in a ladder.

Edge goes to Spear Shelton Benjamin and gets Flap Jacked onto a ladder. Stinger Splash on Edge into the ladder. Crowd is pretty hot for Shelton here. Benoit, Benjamin, Christian, Jericho, and Edge all climb and all end up crashing and burning. Benjamin hits an Exploder Suplex on Edge off the ladder.
Christian sets one ladder up leaning against another, leading to this match’s most famous moment as Shelton Benjamin runs up a ladder to Clothesline Jericho! No matter how many times I see that it continues to be amazing.

Christian gets to the top of the ladder, but gets shoved off by Kane and goes all the way to the floor. He does have Tomko there to break his fall. Jericho and Kane both go off the top of the ladder. Benoit hits a Diving Headbutt from the top of a ladder onto Kane. That’s the kind of thing that makes me cringe knowing how his life ended.

Benoit and Kane fight at the top of the ladder and Benoit manages to knock Kane off. He looks like the winner until Edge shows up with a chair, crushing Benoit’s bad arm and climbing the ladder to win. Ton of heat for Edge winning, they pulled that off perfectly.
Rating: ****1/4. Hell of a match. Benefits from being the first Money in the Bank match. But also had maybe the best talent of any of these matches and a strong story. They were smart to build the drama around Benoit’s arm injury and comeback, and then having him lose because Edge is a dick.
The Aftermath: Edge held onto his title shot for months, finally cashing it in at New Year’s Revolution. He defeated John Cena to become WWE Champion after Cena had survived a brutal Elimination Chamber Match.
