Wrestlemania Greatest Matches #21: Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns

The Build: Vince McMahon wanted his new top babyface, and nothing was stopping that train. Roman Reigns returned from an injury to win the Royal Rumble in January 2015, much to the dismay of internet fans. Reigns was forced to defend his Wrestlemania title shot against Daniel Bryan at Fastlane and emerged victorious. The other complication was that Brock Lesnar’s contract was expiring. That complication was cleared when Lesnar announced on SportsCenter that he had agreed to a new contract a few days before Wrestlemania. So with all that out of the way, we were set for Lesnar vs. Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the main event of Wrestlemania.

The Match
It’s dusk in California, creating a cool atmosphere in the stadium for this match as the sun sets. Reigns enters through the crowd with a massive security detail. It’s good that they dropped that entrance, it didn’t suit him. Big pop for Lesnar. He was on fire at this point, best run of his career. Heyman takes the mic to do Lesnar’s introduction, which should probably be standard.
Lesnar hits a German Suplex and F5 30 seconds in! He’s somehow cut on his cheek already. Lesnar’s like a lion stalking his prey here as he pounds Reigns. More Suplexes for Reigns. And Brock debuts the immortal line “Suplex City, Bitch!”
Lesnar continues to maul Reigns. It’s slow, but the crowd is loving every second. Reigns rallies briefly with some knees on the apron, but then gets Clotheslined down to the floor. JBL’s commentary is great here as he marvels that Reigns is the best challenger to Lesnar and he’s getting absolutely destroyed. Sick Belly to Belly Suplex on Reigns from the apron into the ring. A second F5 only gets a two count.
Lesnar takes his gloves off, which is pretty terrifying in that it signifies that he’s only just now going to get serious. After some Suplexes Lesnar hits a third F5 and Reigns again kicks out. They go to the floor and Lesnar gets posted. Now he’s busted open, not totally sure if he bladed on the floor or pre-cut himself.
Reigns hits a series of three Superman Punches. And then two Spears for a super close two count. Crowd is going wild now. Michael Cole is losing his voice. Reigns goes for a Spear and gets F5ed. Both men are down. The match is at its critical point, the championship hanging in the balance. And then….
That escalated quickly. Rollins Curb Stomps Lesnar once, goes for another but gets caught. Reigns comes in and Spears Lesnar, Rollins hits the Curb Stomp on Reigns to win the title.
Rating: ****1/4. That was a great ride. Three stages, all awesome. Stage one was Brock massacring Reigns. Beating him like he’d stolen something. Just absolute destruction. Stage two was Roman’s comeback, as he fought valiantly and pushed Brock to the absolute brink. And then stage three Rollins interfering, a wild frenzy capped off with a shocking title win. Awesome stuff.
The Aftermath: Rollins had a long run with the title, not losing it until he was forced to forfeit it due to injury in November. Reigns would be the subsequent champion, winning a tournament that culminated at Survivor Series. And Brock Lesnar continues to be the baddest motherfucker on the planet.
