Roman Reigns has been suspended for 30 days for his first violation of the WWE Wellness Policy, as announced by WWE’s official Twitter account moments ago.
This is arguably the highest profile suspension in the ten year history of WWE’s current drug testing regime and a serious shock. In the initial years of the Wellness Policy there were a number of big suspensions, but the number had dwindled in recent years.
The immediate question that jumps out at me is whether this is the reason he lost the WWE Championship on Sunday. My instinct is that it probably wasn’t because if they knew about the suspension I don’t think he would have been booked in the title match for Battleground.
There had to be doubts about whether he was the right next top guy for WWE before this and those doubts are only going to get bigger.
His suspension will end days before the Battleground pay-per-view, so technically the suspension could be fulfilled with him still competing in the match. We will have to see if WWE goes that route but it would really surprise me if they did.
There will surely be more updates in the days to come.
