Friday News Wrap-Up

UFC 194 Live on Pay-Per-View This Weekend

UFC presents a huge card this Saturday. The main event is Jose Aldo vs. Conor McGregor for the Undisputed Featherweight Championship. Also on the card: Chris Weidman vs. Luke Rockhold for the Middleweight Championship, Ronaldo Souza vs. Yoel Romero in a Middleweight bout, Demian Maia vs. Gunnar Nelson in a Welterweight fight, and Max Holloway vs. Jeremy Stephens in a Featherweight bout.

McGregor is favored (-125). That strikes me as more based on McGregor’s popularity than the actual skill of the fighters. Regardless, I’ll be watching and so should anyone else with an interest in MMA. Biggest UFC show of the year and one of the biggest ever.

WWE Presents Tables, Ladders, and Chairs on WWE Network

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have probably the least important WWE show of the year. December is always a rough month for WWE, and this year has been no exception. Sheamus will defend the WWE Championship against Roman Reigns in a TLC Match in the main event.

The full card:

-TLC Match for WWE World Heavyweight Championship: Sheamus (c) vs. Roman Reigns
-Intercontinental Championship: Kevin Owens (c) vs. Dean Ambrose
-Ladder Match for WWE Tag Team Championship: The New Day (c) vs. The Lucha Dragons vs. The Usos
-Diva’s Championship: Charlotte (c) vs. Paige
-Eight Man Elimination Tables Match: The ECW Originals (The Dudley Boyz, Tommy Dreamer, and Rhyno) vs. The Wyatt Family (Bray Wyatt, Luke Harper, Erick Rowan, and Braun Strowman)
-Chairs Match for United States Championship: Alberto Del Rio (c) vs. Jack Swagger

Lackluster as creative has been lately, this isn’t a bad card at all. Most of the matches project to be pretty good, although I can’t say I have high hopes for the main event.

Daniel Bryan Thinks His WWE Career Could Be Over

In news we’ve probably seen coming for awhile, Daniel Bryan thinks he may be done wrestling for WWE. WWE’s doctors are not willing to clear him to return to the ring, and without their approval he can’t wrestle.

That said, not being able to wrestling for WWE and not being able to wrestle at all aren’t the same thing. If Bryan could get out of his contract, there would be no shortage of offers that would come his way. Most intriguing would be working for New Japan. Bryan vs. Nakamura, Bryan vs. Okada, Bryan vs. Styles…no shortage of great potential matches there.

Sting to Undergo Neck Surgery

Sting revealed on Ric Flair’s podcast that he will be undergoing neck surgery as a result of the injuries suffered in his match against Seth Rollins at Night of Champions. I would expect this to be the end of his in-ring career, but it’s hard to ever write anyone off in the wrestling business.

Rousey/Holm II Expected for UFC 200 in July 2016

As we expected, Ronda Rousey is likely to get her rematch against Holly Holm on July 9th in Las Vegas at UFC 200. The fact that this was reported by the New York Times demonstrates just how huge a star Rousey is.

Brock Lesnar to Face Alberto Del Rio in Los Angeles on December 19th

Sadly, this show will not be on WWE Network. Brock Lesnar will return to the ring for a match against Alberto Del Rio at a WWE house show in Los Angeles next Saturday. Ticket sales are reportedly poor, which is a shock to me. I don’t know if that’s a promotional issue, a timing issue, or if WWE has somehow managed to devalue the Brock Lesnar brand.

Lucha Underground Season 2 to Premiere January 27th

I’m so ready for this.
