In perhaps the greatest upset in MMA history, Ronda Rousey was defeated tonight by Holly Holm at UFC 193 in Melbourne, Australia. Rousey was defeated by knockout in the second round after a devastating kick to the jaw and a series of punches on the ground. Holm dominated the fight with superior striking ability, was able to take Rousey down, and even escaped a clinch. Rousey was out of sorts throughout the fight, having no answer for Holm’s superior striking ability. Rousey was hurt several times in the first round by punches and was gasping for breath by the end of the round.
Holm scored with a huge kick to the jaw early in the second round, knocking Rousey out cold. The referee stepped in and stopped the fight. With the win, Holm is the new UFC Bantamweight Champion and the first woman to defeat Ronda Rousey.
Rousey was expected to take time away from fighting in 2016 due to film commitments, and her future is very much up in the air after this defeat. Will she want a rematch to win back her title? Or will she move on to movies, WWE, and other projects? A lot of potential outcomes here. Regardless, we have the biggest story of the year in MMA tonight.
