Thinking about Chris Jericho’s career who outside of Shawn Michaels did he really have a string of great matches with? Maybe Ultimo Dragon, but that would require a rewatch of those matches. In his WCW and WWF runs he had a ton of really good matches with a lot of guys, but he never had a run like say Shawn had in 1996 or Hunter in 2000 or Austin in 2001 where every match was just golden. Nor has he had runs of matches with different guys that produced match after match that just never got old. With the exception of his run of matches with Shawn Michaels which transcended that. Chris Jericho might be the most consistent wrestler in North America in the last 20 years though. He rarely just sucks. Though the match he had with Kurt Angle at No Way Out 2000, which began the formation of this thesis, was pretty bad. To compare it to baseball Chris Jericho is a guy who is not an Albert Pujols, but consistently has on OBP in the high .300s, has got a good bit of power, and can run the bases and does so year after year after year.

backbreaker

There are some real clunkers here. Not to say it is just the fault of Jericho. To be fair a couple of these were Monday Night War 3 minute specials and it would be unfair to hold anything against them even if the May 2000 Raw match was a carbon copy of the No Way Out match including chinlocks which are oh so necessary in a five minute match. At least Angle didn’t botch the Olympic Slam that time. Even granting that it is not like they produced sterling PPV contests one after another. Also I should stipulate that Sharknado was on during the viewing of the Rebellion match so that might not have gotten undivided attention especially after Angle grabbed yet another Chinlock right as a Shark came flying through the window of a bar. Kurt Angle is Randy Orton level Chinlock happy in these matches. It seems like every time something gets going he grabs a Chinlock. There are sub five minute matches where he grabs the Chinlock. The booking is also at fault. There were ref bumps and run ins and distractions to the point I thought I was watching WCW and not the WWF. And when I say WCW it means Thunder level WCW. Here is the list of outside troublemakers: Chyna, Bob Backlund, Stephanie McMahon, Kane, Shane McMahon, and Spike Dudley of all people. Not to mention they bumped every ref in the company. Hell Joey Marella got bumped and he’d been dead for six years before these two wrestled.

sharknado

Bottom line the only decent match was the one with The Rock in it that no one saw because it was Christmas. They aren’t even bad in a way that lends to any analysis whatsoever. I mean it is seriously just a series of chinlocks and run-ins.Really just watch Sharknado instead. I mean Steve Sanders jumps through the air into the maw of a Great White Shark that had just been ejected from the Sharknado and then cut his way out with a chainsaw. These two ain’t topping that.

Rebellion 2001 is not a dud. It’s a pretty good match. And at 15 minutes long how can it not be? I would expect somebody taking the time and energy to do this to do it right.
